Let’s Create Some Rust Holes
Using a 1/2 sanding drum (100 grit) on your dremel tool, gently skim the backside of the area you wish to have rust holes, be ready to back off as soon as it breaks thru the surface. This will usually leave a small hole and a very thin spot to further hack up with your hobby knife.
Best to start out on a body you don’t care much about, just to get the hang of it. My dremel is variable speed, so I have it set to 4 which seems to be just right. I do the same method on the floor pan and trunk areas.
If you do not own a dremel type tool, simply dab some model cement on the area, let sit for 30 sec. and remove the paint using a toothpick or nail. As seen in the hood picture.
Now that these areas have been thinned out and carved and you are pleased with the look, it’s on to the next step.
Using a small paint brush and some acetone, we start by dabbing the acetone around the rotted spots to soften the paint. While the paint is softened, we can now take our hobby knife and gently push the paint back away from the rotted area, this will leave a nice ridge in the paint that will dry hard and simulate flaking paint around the rust.
